On a mission to further diversify and broaden the global talent pool, African Leadership Group is creating an online learning portal that recommends courses based on the user’s interests and experience.
Due to the overwhelming discrepancies in African leadership, the African Leadership Group (ALG) is focused on selecting and developing talented individuals across Africa and beyond. ALG and The Room pride themselves in engaging in the most challenging tasks and pushing boundaries.
A famous quote from ALG & The Room founder, Fred Swankier reads “ I believe that those of us who are privileged enough to be educated, healthy, and part of powerful networks should not be doing easy things. The only way to justify our privilege is to do the hard things that society demands of us to solve tough problems and create opportunities for others. I launched The Room to bring the most ambitious ‘doers’ together to do these hard things that will change the world.”
On a mission to further diversify and broaden the global talent pool, ALG is creating an online learning portal that recommends courses based on the user’s interests and experience. The product team need support with the creation of two new features:
-- An onboarding experience that introduces the product and learns about users’ skills and experience.
-- A personalized landing page that shows them some of the services and courses available to them
Most african countries are still rapidly developing, however, due to the lack of adequate learning infrastructure and the high cost of education, there is a need to diversify learning options across Africa through digital learning platforms.
Although Internet access is still an ongoing challenge throughout Africa, huge steps have been taken to bring more connectivity throughout the continent. This will provide individuals the opportunity to learn at their own pace, using multimedia tools, video and study resources that would otherwise not be available to them. This ties into the problems ALG was established to curb.
Based on the research conducted on the strengths and weaknesses of direct and indirect competitors, I have employed a human centred approach to designing a responsive mobile application and website that puts the users’s needs at the epicentre of its functionality.
It takes into account user feedback, data driven metrics and retention analytics. It also takes full advantage of ALG’s educational expertise and resources in providing a range of courses that span different sectors.
A responsive website with a focus on Mobile first - Studies have shown that most students and young entrepreneurs are always on the go, hence, their mobile devices transform into their digital workstations.
Calendar & Notifications - This will serve as a reminder system for due dates, meetings and announcements, so that users are always on track.
Adjust Video Quality - Due to the inconsistencies in Internet infrastructure throughout Africa, the ability to be able to set playback quality and speeds to suit the users internet speeds would be greatly beneficial.
Live lessons & Attendance Log - Attendance logs are recorded once students engage in the live lessons integrated into the app.
Grading System - Allow teachers to grade assignments and give much needed feedback to students on areas of improvement.
Video Preview - The ability to get a quick glimpse at the course contents to know if it truly interests them. Customers have indicated that they enjoy the ability to see what a course entails before fully committing.
Multi-language Support - The world is made up of diverse communities and ethnicities. Users have indicated frustrations of courses only being offered in English or Spanish. It is imperative that steps be taken to facilitate inclusivity.
